ESG

Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) Initiatives at Derwent FM

We are committed to creating and managing sustainable living places. Our ESG initiatives demonstrate our dedication to sustainability, wellbeing, and community impact; here is an overview:

Environmental Initiatives

Energy Management: We proudly hold ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications for environmental and energy management. Our Building Management Systems (BMS) diligently track energy performance, enabling us to reduce consumption effectively.

Water Management: To minimise water and chemical usage, we’ve introduced eco-friendly cleaning products and systems like OzoKlenz.

Recycling and Reusing: Our robust recycling programs, engaging composting competitions, and donation drives actively reduce waste while supporting local charities.

Enhancing Biodiversity: Across our sites, we’ve installed Bug Hotels and Bird Houses to support local wildlife. Additionally, we’ve created Herb Gardens at Hyndland House (Glasgow), Brunswick House (Cambridge) and the University of Hertfordshire, engaging students in gardening. Furthermore, our tree-planting initiative at the University of Essex promotes environmental education and green spaces.

Social Initiatives

We prioritise the wellbeing of students within our student accommodation and managed spaces.

Diversity and Inclusion: We champion diversity and inclusion across our portfolio holding regular events as part of our social calendar.

In 2024, Derwent FM, alongside the Places for People Group, took part in Leeds Pride for the first time. An event we aim to continue to support in the future.

Mental Health: On each of our sites, we have trained Mental Health First Aiders who raise awareness and offer confidential one-on-one sessions to students. Additionally, we are strategic partners with Student Minds, working to enhance mental health services and support awareness campaigns. These initiatives demonstrate our focus on prioritising mental health and wellbeing for our students.

Community-Focused Projects: We firmly believe in the power of community collaboration to enhance health and wellbeing. As part of our commitment, we engage in several meaningful projects. Our site teams, local residents, and students come together for litter picks in the local area, fostering a cleaner environment.

We actively encourage student and staff participation in local health and wellbeing initiatives through volunteer programs. Additionally, we support the British Heart Foundation and other local charities, by regularly collecting unused items.

Governance Initiatives

National Code of Students: We operate our residential accommodation in alignment with the requirements of the National Code (Unipol Student Homes).

Global Student Living Platinum Certified: The certification is based on feedback from our student residents. The GSL score index is measured on meeting set thresholds within each of the 7 metrics that make up the GSL Index Score: Condition & Quality, Bedroom, Value for Money, Care & Support, Recycling & Environmental Facilities, Overall Management and Internet. Achieving Platinum Certification demonstrates that we go over and above to exceed these rigorous standards in our mission to creating communities where students can thrive

Audits and Compliance: Our internal audits, conducted by our SHEQ team and Group, ensure independent monitoring and review of our operations. These audits cover safety, gas, electricity, and management systems.

Training and Awareness: We prioritise comprehensive training for our team, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance while promoting a safe work environment.

Integrated Management System (IMS): Our IMS holds accreditation to ISO standards, including ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety), ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and ISO 50001 (Energy Management).
